Two climates, two different mechanisms of skin ageing

Mild, wet climates — the Pacific coast of Canada and the UK are useful examples — and cold, dry climates like the Canadian Prairies both produce environmental stress on the skin. But the mechanisms are fundamentally different, and so are the appropriate responses.

Understanding the distinction matters for anyone who has moved between climate types, or who uses skincare formulated for one while living in the other.

The mild wet climate: what skin actually faces

In a mild, wet climate like Vancouver or London, the primary stressors are moisture variability and UV. Humidity is moderate to high — often above 70% — meaning the skin's surface barrier is passively maintained by ambient moisture much of the year. Winters are cool, not extreme. Real stress, but not the sustained assault of sub-zero temperatures and near-zero humidity.

The characteristic skin concerns of mild wet climates are congestion, surface oiliness, and UV-driven photoaging — not chronic barrier disruption. Standard skincare formulated for these conditions prioritises lightweight barrier function, SPF, and surface-active ingredients.

The cold dry climate: what actually happens

In a cold, dry climate like Winnipeg, the primary stressor is the near-complete absence of humidity for five months of the year. At −20°C, outdoor absolute humidity approaches zero. Ceramide synthesis slows. Wind strips the hydrolipidic film. And repeated transitions between cold outdoor air and heated indoor air — near-desert humidity levels in both cases — cycle the barrier through continuous stress.

The characteristic skin concerns of cold dry climates are barrier disruption, chronic TEWL elevation, ceramide depletion, and the cumulative structural ageing that results from sustained compromise of these systems. Standard skincare — formulated primarily for temperate or mild conditions — addresses the symptoms without the mechanism.

Why climate-appropriate formulation matters

A humectant like hyaluronic acid performs differently depending on ambient humidity. In a humid environment, it draws moisture from the air to the skin. In a near-zero humidity environment, it may draw moisture from the dermis instead — potentially increasing net water loss rather than reducing it.

An occlusive that maintains its film at 15°C may change consistency at −20°C. A formula validated in temperate lab conditions is not necessarily validated for sub-zero outdoor use.

Most skincare is formulated, tested, and validated in temperate conditions. This is not a criticism — it is the appropriate design brief for the majority of consumers. For people in cold, dry climates, it means the starting assumption of most formulation decisions doesn't match their actual environment.

The practical implication

Skincare built for mild wet climates is not wrong — it's right for that climate. In a cold dry climate, a different set of priorities applies: barrier lipid replenishment over surface barrier function, cold-stable performance over cosmetic elegance, prevention of cumulative structural damage over reactive symptom treatment.
